Force & Torque Measurement

Watch Video of this lesson

Force and Torque instruments are used to measure force, weight, and torque. We can measure torque and force by changing the sensor or transducer.

Torque is defined as the moment of a force, a measure of its tendency to produce torsion and rotation about an axis.

SI Units of Force and Torque

Units of force are pounds, Newtons, etc while torque display units of in-oz, ft-lbs, etc.

The International System of Units(SI) of force and torque is the Newton(N) and Newton-Metre(N-m) respectively.

Force and Load Sensors

Force and load sensors cover electrical sensing devices that are used to measure tension, compression, and shear forces.

Torque Measurement

Torque sensors are divided into two main types, reaction, and torque.

Reaction torque sensors measure static and dynamic torque with a stationary or non-rotating transducer and rotary torque sensors use a rotary transducer to measure torque.

The technology of torque sensors can be many different types of devices including sensor element or chip, sensor or transducer, instrument or meter, recorder, and totalizers.

Common outputs for torque sensors include analog voltage, analog current, switch or maybe alarm.

Maximum shock, maximum vibration, operating temperature also needs to be considered.
