01.Vernier Depth Gauge
Vernier Depth Gauge as the name suggests is used to measure the depth from the surface of reference of an object. Vernier caliper also has a depth bar but this can not be used as the standard measurement.
Types of Vernier Depth Gauge
There are two types of Vernier depth gauge-
- Analog type
- Digital type
The least count of analog vernier depth gauge is 0.02 mm while least count of digital type depth gauge is 0.01 mm
How to measure depth with Vernier Depth gauge?
The way of taking a measurement of vernier depth gauge is the same as vernier caliper has. Vernier scale is moveable on the main scale.
In the case of a digital type vernier depth gauge result can see in liquid crystal display with a maximum measuring speed of 1.5 m/s.
The measurement procedure of Vernier Depth Gauge is follow
First, we have to find out what is least count of the vernier depth gauge, in this case, we have least count of 0.10 mm
The way of taking the measurement is the same as a vernier caliper, just follow these steps-
- Take the value of the Main scale before zero of vernier scale i.e. 21 mm in this case
- Observe alignment between two scales i.e. 0.40 mm
- Sum this both value, that is our final value i.e. 21.40 mm
2. Depth Micrometer
We also measure depth through Vernier caliper, but Vernier caliper does not deliver as much accuracy and precision, because the extension rod of Vernier caliper has no standard, it used only for comparison purposes.
Depth micrometer used to measure the depth of an object with precision and accuracy with the least count of 0.01 mm. The measuring span is 25 mm just like in micrometer, that can change by changing upsetting rod.
How to Measure with Micrometer?
Measuring Concept of Depth Micrometer is the same as External Micrometer. The main differences are direction and position. The reading scale is Vertical in-depth micrometer and the Direction of reading is opposite (starting from the end scale).

The accuracy of Depth Gauge is 0.01 mm which is fair enough for linear measurement and also accurate than vernier caliper. You can choose Digital Depth Micrometer, in order to simplify observation only. Both types of Depth Micrometer delivers the same accuracy.
Depth Micrometer follows national or international measurement standards, while vernier caliper is not(in order to check depth through extension rod only).
The main use of depth micrometer is to check the depth of any objects. Basically used in industrial areas of manufacturing plants.
