Ceramics are compounds which comprise of bonds of metallic or nonmetallic, it can also comprise of ionic or non-ionic bonds.
All earthenware and Bricks are common examples of ceramics.
The first use of ceramics is that of using Pots by the prehistoric man. Interestingly the word ceramics means Making for pots.
The Greeks first invented the word ceramics (Not surprising because almost all the inventions are Greeks ).
Mostly ceramics materials are good insulators of electricity because of the varying ionic properties of the ions which are involved in the bond making process.
The ceramics materials are usually porous which means that they contain pores at the microscopic level.
This makes them more vulnerable to fractures. In material science, Fractography is widely used to understand the mechanics of failure of a material or Fracture of materials.
As the ceramics are made by ionic bonds and amorphous materials they are more likely to be a fracture. Our purpose is to develop the materials to minimize failure.
Ceramics show plastic deformations, however for the noncrystalline ceramics, the deformations are due to viscous fluid flow which is very slow and takes time. Most ceramics are semiconductors.
Ceramics are widely used as miniature break circuits or the MCB because of their Grain boundary defects which make the circuit breaker when the voltage exceeds the Threshold voltages.
