A spirit level is a device used to check the level, flatness, or straightness of surfaces, especially surface plates and machine beds.

It is a basic angular measuring instrument that works using a bubble enclosed in a glass vial.

Due to gravity, the bubble always moves toward the highest point of the vial.

When the base of the spirit level (called the reference plane) is perfectly horizontal, the bubble rests at the center of the graduated scale.

Any movement of the bubble from the center indicates inclination or unevenness of the surface. The amount of bubble movement over the scale gives the angular deviation of the surface.
